The essence of North Omaha is FLAVOR. It’s in the candy painted cars booming down the block, the vibrant and captivating murals, the rich jazz legacy and in the love put into the food from the soul. A meal with that North O flavor brings an intangible sense of home, of belonging, instantly transporting you back to that small kitchen table at your Grandma’s house.
When you visit Jackson’s Fair Deal Café on 24th St, you get that same feeling, as soon as you step inside. The rich wood tables and the brick behind the bar contrast beautifully with the industrial style, allowing you to focus on the ever important feast. The courtyard area is also inviting; it beckons with comfortable seating and a chess and checkers table, perfect for weekend conversations.
The meal itself was easily one of the best breakfasts I’ve had in the Omaha Metro. I usually opt for the mouth watering Catfish (which sings when paired with the pickles, trust me), or the North Omaha potato casserole, but this was my first time having the breakfast experience in the new space. I ordered the Lake St. plate, which brought three French Toast, two eggs and a choice of two meats to our table. The French toast was perfectly cinnamon kissed and my scrambled eggs were sumptuous; a new personal favorite. It was the bacon though…ooof…I wasn’t prepared for the thick cut, crispy yet chewy symphonic ode to pork belly that I had. My dining companions both opted for omelets, hash browns and grits; needless to say they were beyond pleased. Our server Jackie’s kind smile and knowledge of the menu added another layer of joy to an already awesome experience.
It’s exciting to see another jewel in the crown of North 24th St.; Jackson’s Fair Deal Café shines brightly among them. I say, go for breakfast. Soak up the good vibes and the smooth Motown playlist. Support some of the small businesses next door. Play some checkers. In joy.
